Agile project delivery part 1 – the role of Product Owner

The business and IT world is abuzz with the widespread adoption of Agile methodology for the delivery of projects.

Did you know that according to many surveys and studies…

Having a Product Owner was cited as the most critical factor in the success of Agile projects – 63% of respondents ranked it as “Very Important”, and 25% ranked it as “Important.”

A product owner plays a key role in being the voice of the customer and ensuring that the team is building a product that meets the needs of users. This includes:

  • Defining and prioritising the product backlog: The product owner is responsible for creating and maintaining a prioritised list of features and user stories that the team will work on during each sprint.
  •  Communicating with stakeholders: The product owner serves as the main point of contact between the development team and stakeholders, gathering feedback and sharing updates on the team’s progress.
  • Making decisions: The product owner is empowered to decide about the product, such as what features to include in a release and how to adjust priorities based on changing market conditions or customer feedback.
  • Collaborating with the development team: The product owner works closely with the development team to ensure they understand the product vision, user needs, and business goals. They also answer questions, provide feedback, and clarify requirements as needed.

Product owners in agile methodology can come from various backgrounds, such as IT delivery, marketing, design, development, business analysis, or project management. The most important aspect of being a product owner is deeply understanding the product and its target audience.

At a major federal government agency in Australia, I contributed to delivering three large and complex Agile IT projects over three years. Throughout this period, I collaborated extensively with ten product owners to tackle the business and IT aspects of the projects. Based on my observations, seamless cooperation between business and IT proved instrumental in delivering agile projects effectively, giving added significance to the product owner’s responsibilities.

In summary, the product owner role is the most critical aspect of successfully delivering a project under an agile methodology. Product owners can come from various backgrounds, but they need to deeply understand the product and target audience. On a personal note, seamless cooperation between business and IT has proved instrumental in executing agile projects effectively.

This is the first in a series of nine blogs on Agile methodology for IT projects. In my next blog, I will look at the importance of the role of the Scrum master.
